Alternative method for energy crisis is renewable energy which is becoming more popular and is currently a hot topic in research and development. Wind energy which is clean source of energy with no cost, and more efficiency has been chosen more preferably than other renewable resources. Wind turbine is a device that converts kinetic energy into electrical energy. Based on the configuration, wind turbine increases are classified into vertical axis and horizontal axis. Wind generation system is of two types namely fixed speed and variable speed systems. The variable speed wind generation system employing Permanent Magnet Synchronous Generator (PMSG) and Doubly Fed Induction Generator (DFIG), is more preferred than fixed speed wind turbine generator due to reduced power fluctuations and an improved reactive power supply. Variable speed permanent synchronous generator-based wind turbine is more advantageous than doubly fed induction generator based variable speed wind turbine due to elimination of gear box which reduces the weight of the turbine, cost and maintenance. This project deals with design of permanent magnet synchronous generator for wind energy conversion system using three different permanent magnet materials such as Alnico, Samarium cobalt, and Neodymium iron boron. Simulation is done using MAGNET software for designing the permanent magnet synchronous generator and various performances are discussed for three different permanent magnets.
